Ready for Sunrise 2027?

A new dimension of the barcode
The use of 2D barcodes is becoming increasingly popular in many areas. Compared to barcodes, they offer a higher information capacity, a crucial prerequisite for traceability, product transparency and authentication. From 2027, only goods labelled with 2D barcodes will therefore be accepted in retail by all parties involved.
This "Sunrise 2027" project from our partner GS1 is not the end of simple barcodes; EAN-13 and UPC-A will remain in use. But the provision of important additional information such as batch number, expiry date or an information link is only possible with 2D codes. This is because only with this technology can large amounts of data be displayed on a very small area.
Modern 2D barcode scanners are required to capture these GS1 DataMatrix codes quickly and reliably now and in the future. The laser scanners long favoured by retailers cannot read DataMatrix codes. But even older 2D models sometimes do not have the necessary technical requirements.
