Scan multiple barcodes at once
Multi-code scanning for increased throughput in warehouses and logistics
Multi-code scanning reduces the number of steps and potential sources of error by capturing multiple codes in a single scan. The result: measurably higher throughput with a lower error rate.
Where multi-code scanning has the greatest leverage
Product labels often have a complex structure: part numbers, serial numbers, EAN codes and industry-specific identifiers such as IMEI numbers. Pallets often carry several labels at the same time – e.g. SSCC and GTIN, batch number and best-before date.
In such cases, multi-code scanning enables faster data capture from goods receipt to picking, transport and handling: a single scan captures different barcode formats, automatically formats the data and transmits it to the target system in the correct order.
What lies behind the speed
Modern MDE devices use so-called 2D imagers, which capture the entire scan area as an image. Powerful algorithms identify the barcodes contained therein – regardless of position, orientation or code symbology.
On the one hand, hardware is crucial for fast multi-code scanning: a powerful scan module with sufficient resolution and depth of field to reliably read codes of different sizes simultaneously. Decoding multiple codes is computationally intensive – powerful hardware makes a direct difference here in terms of shorter processing times. The quality of the lighting in the scanning area also plays an important role, especially in poor lighting conditions, on reflective surfaces or with damaged labels.
The software is just as important: it filters, sorts and formats the scanned data – fully automatically and without manual post-processing. All relevant parameters are configured in advance in the scanning software: In what order and in what format is the data transferred? Which codes should actually be captured? Which separators are set? And what happens if a code is unreadable?
Our team will advise you – including on-site testing
The solution that best suits your process depends on factors such as label structure, reading distance, environmental conditions and IT infrastructure. The Barcotec team will support you from the needs analysis to commissioning – and will enable you to test suitable devices directly in your process so that you can evaluate the solution under real conditions before making a decision.
