SSCC - Clearly labelling transport units
Transparent processes are essential to ensure a smooth process from dispatch to goods receipt. Clear labelling of each transport unit - whether container, pallet or carton - is an important building block for this. The SSCC (Serial Shipping Container Code) makes this particularly effective, as it links each physical unit directly to the digital information flow.

What exactly is an SSCC?
The SSCC is an internationally standardised 18-digit barcode that is structured in accordance with GS1 guidelines. It serves as a unique "serial number" for logistical units. Each code is only assigned once, making every pallet, every parcel and every container unique. The SSCC consists of the GS1 company number, a consecutive serial number and a check digit - guaranteeing unique labelling worldwide.
Prerequisite for use
In order for the SSCC to be fully effective, it must be integrated into the existing EDI process chain. The unique identification on the label serves as a link between the physical transport unit and the electronic business messages. The SSCC is directly linked to order and delivery data via standardised formats such as DESADV or INVOIC. This means that all information - from article and order numbers to pallet structures and packaging details - is available to the recipient in the system before the goods arrive and can be processed automatically.
Advantages of the SSCC
The SSCC significantly simplifies and automates processes across all stages. As all parties involved can access the same data record, the SSCC simplifies communication between the supplier, freight forwarder and recipient - a clear advantage for smooth and reliable transport logistics.
- Even during packing and loading, it is possible to clearly identify which goods are on which pallet. This reduces queries, facilitates internal control and ensures that consignments are put together more quickly and delivered without errors.
- Consignments can be tracked seamlessly along the entire transport chain. During loading and unloading, pallets or containers can be quickly scanned and compared with the digital delivery information. This speeds up handling processes, reduces incorrect loading and creates greater transparency for customers.
- Instead of checking each pallet or parcel individually when goods are received, a single scan is enough to transfer the entire transport unit with the EDI data transmitted in advance to the inventory. This saves time, reduces queues at the ramps and allows employees to focus on deviations or special cases.

Successful implementation of SSCC
Barcotec supports companies in the introduction of the SSCC standard with practical advice and customised solutions along the entire process chain.
This includes the development of GS1-compliant label layouts as well as the provision of reliable printing solutions - both mobile solutions for flexible use and stationary solutions for large volumes. For demanding outdoor use, we provide robust Auto-ID devices that ensure precise data capture and reliable communication even under difficult conditions. In incoming goods, mobile computers with large-format displays enable transparent processing of extensive delivery information.
In this way, the SSCC standard is not only implemented technically, but also established as a universal tool for efficiency, process reliability and transparency.
